Ca m’est arrivé au boulot, et c’est devenu si rocambolesque que je l’ai reproduit pour mon blog. Ca complète aussi un thème initialisé il y a longtemps.
That happened in my job, and became so huge that I reproduced it for my blog. It also completes a topic started here long time ago.

Nous avons sur notre intranet des liens vers des dictionnaires en ligne et le plus utilisé est le français <-> anglais.
Je reçois l’autre fois un email interne parlant du déménagement de nos bureaux à un autre endroit du site et je veux en informer mon chef, qui siège aux Etats-Unis.
We have on our Intranet network some links toward online dictonnaries and the most used is the French <> English one.
The other day, I got an internal email dealing with our move in new offices onto another part of the site and I wanted to inform my boss, who sits in the US.

En écrivant un court mèl (sic), je me retrouve toutefois devant un doute. Quand c’est mon chef, je n’utilise pas toujours la première expression qui me vient, mais je la vérifie parfois. Ce jour-là, c’était le cas.
Il faut que je traduise : l’implantation/l’agencement des bureaux. A priori, je dirai « the layout of the offices » mais let’s check and make it clear.
Dans les « dictionnaire français > anglais », je clique sur le premier lien que fournit notre intranet. Bof, puis bof, puis hum hum… et finalement je ne sais pas. Ci-dessous le détail :
By writing this short email, I found myself in front of a terrible issue. And when it is for my boss, I just do not use the first wording that comes to my mind but I am used to check it first. And so I did check.
I need to translate : “l’implantation/l’agencement des bureaux ». My first idea was to write « the layout of the offices » but let’s check and make it clear.
In the “French > English dictionary”, I click on the first link supplied by our intranet homepage. Then well, well, well, finally I do not know ! Hereunder details of my experience:

Pour la petite histoire, j’ai mis « layout », juste après avoir vérifié que cette notion pouvait aussi bien s’appliquer à des éléments lourds (bâtiments, bureaux, etc.) et pas seulement à la mise en page des journaux.
As conclusion, I finally put « layout », just after having checked that this notion could also be applied to hardware (buildings, offices, etc.) and not only to documents and newspapers.
